“There are no new messages, only new messengers.”
These were the words of my writing coach, Azul.
I met him a month ago as I started to move into the second revision of the book.
I asked him how I could tell our story in a new way.
Discomfort breeds growth.
A stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet.
Love over fear.
These ideas aren’t new, I said.
So many writers, artists and gurus have explained them better than I ever will.
So why try?
Because, Azul explained, we’re here to remember.
And as humans, we forget.
That’s why we need new messengers and stories to remind us of what’s true.
We all experience the same sunlight but each have our own magnifying glass.
Creativity is putting your magnifying glass to the sun and showing us what you see.
It’s telling an old lesson through a new story.
Your story.
The only one that belongs to you.
So do us a favor and show us what you see.
Love,
Matt
Song Of The Week: Fever To The Form by Nick Mulvey
Photo Of The Week: I had an emergency appendectomy last week while visiting LA. This is my nervous selfie right before surgery. I’m currently recovering and so grateful for all the well wishes I received from so many of you. See you in two weeks <3
Completely unrelated, but I just wanted to post a little note of appreciation for all of the newsletters that you’ve sent out for the past two or so years that I’ve been subscribed. I get excited to see you in my inbox and I know that each message is going to be amazing.
There was one in specific email “It’s time to move on”, that has a little chunk of quote that I have quite literally screenshotted and sent to at least 20+ friends when they are dealing with relationships that they need to set free (mostly romantic, I’m in my young 20’s). I even have printed it out for people to tape to their walls and look at daily. It would be too long to type in this message, but if you look for that email i am sure you won’t be dissapointed. Regardless, thank you, Matt, for touching so many lives and for putting forth the effort to write out what you think. That email alone has been so impactful on my life and the lives of so many of my friends, and I will definitely refer to it for the next many years of my life as well:)
Thanks for the update Matt, amid your unexpected ER visit! Keep resting and take it one day at a time. Looking forward to hearing more on your book. I've always appreciated your insight and way of putting certain topics into perspective with creative story telling or quoting. Si se puede!
